Ride with GPS: Bike Navigation App Reviews

Record a ride or navigate a ride

As a new rider all I want is an app that gives me directions and records my progress. To create a route or follow someone elses is a mess. I cant wait until I can use google maps for more of this stuff and Im sure it wont cost me $50!!!

Not enough features

I see no value in this app. Strava has all the same features for free, plus gives you a whole lot more feedback on how you were doing. Fail.

Need it more than 7 days

Whats up with only a 7 day purchase??? I liked the way it worked when I downloaded a ride already planned, but to improve I would love to have the option to reverse route half way through ride. And of course option to buy outright or at least for 1 year, not just 7 days.

Poor Contrast

Update: the app regularly crashes. Please fix ASAP. Im a paying customer but I wont be for long if this isnt fixed. ##### I recently went on a 8-day bike tour in a place where I needed route guidance. This is an excellent app for that, in terms of preplanning on the computer then downloading the route onto the iPhone. My biggest complaint is the poor contrast between roads and background. Roads are displayed as white with pale gray edges over a pale yellow background. Text is very small. In the best of conditions, its hard to read. In average to the worst of conditions (bright sun, sunglasses, bumpy roads, etc., it is just about impossible to tell what road youre on or what roads are coming up. This will need to be addressed before the app gets 5 stars from me. Also annoying, twice in about 20 rides, I have somehow inadvertently paused the app while still riding. The app missed collecting data until I noticed it and restarted it. It shouldnt be so easy to inadvertently do that. There should be a confirming ("Do you really want to pause data collection?") tap required. Otherwise, RideWithGPS is a very good app overall and the beat I have found for planning out a ride then following it. I have abandoned my Garmin device.

Pay to upgrade every 7 days?

Whos ridiculous idea was this? You are not the only app in the pond! Ill stick with Strava. Very poor pricing model. Only useful feature I find in the app is planning a route and even that could use a better way to undo an accidental click from a route.

Great

For calorie tracking and long rides, there’s no other! If you care about actual cycling more than KoMs, this is for you!

Thank your making an iPad app!

Strava doesnt even have an iPad app. Keep up the great work!

Love it!

Very helpful!!!

Requires Facebook Login or Account Login. It will not let you use the app otherwise. I will change my rating if this changes.

My Fav

Best ride planning app. Ive been using since 2010 to plan cross country and major rides. Plus it is my daily ride log.

Great with RFLKT+- love turn by turn nav!

It is both simple and satisfying to use this app with Wahoos RFLKT. It took me surprisingly little time to design a route and ride it. The turn by turn navigation was flawless. I used to use Cyclemeter but changed to this because of its wonderful integration with the website.

Fantastic power efficient app

My main concern going in was whether or not the app would torch my battery (I’m looking at you strava and map my ride) as I frequently ride over 5-6hrs at a time. Im not sure what the developers are doing behind the scenes with this app but it is by far the most power efficient GPS app i have tried. It works so well I started using it for running & hiking in addition to cycling. The turn by turn nav is done very well (esp coming from meh garmin devices) and the application is intuitive and easy to use. Love the service, and the app really adds a whole new dimension to it.

Great App

I have been using the website to plan rides for years so I was excited to try the app. It works great and best of all is no a power hog. I can ride for hours without having to worry about it zapping my battery.

Man, I wanted this to work. **Update: it works!

Gave the update a try on 5/25. Rode 52 miles this weekend on a totally new ride. Turn by turn worked great, and all data recorded properly, including heart rate, cadence, speed, power, GPS, etc. They finally did it! Genuinely stoked. This is the holy grail. They got a new subscriber. My equipment is described below. Ill give them five stars (because I gave them one before) but there are a few improvements they should still make. First, as I completed my ride, I realized that I knew a better way home than the designated route. There should be a way to dismiss the off course warning (lost all on-screen data for last couple miles). If theres a way to do it and continue recording, I couldnt find it. Second, they should incorporate into the app a convenient way to upload to Strava and Training Peaks like the Wahoo Fitness app. I realize they may consider these competitors, but lots of us have been using TP for many years, and Strava is definitely where its at today. Fortunately, I could just download the .tcx from the site and upload to whatever platform I prefer. Finally, they should build in turn by turn to a route (with recording running). As it stands, I had to edit the route to start at my house. **************** Ive used Wahoos app for years, and for the last year Ive been riding with a RFLKT+, a TCKR , and a Powertap wheel. All work AWESOME. Recently traded out the ant+ cap on the Powertap for for Bluetooth Smart. Works even better. All running latest firmware, super stable, and vastly superior to my Garmin. FWIW - I also use the Echo watch for running and love it paired with TICKR and Wahoo app. The only missing component is turn by turn for new rides. RidewithGPS promises exactly that. Yesterday I loaded it up, paid the $4 for the 7 day basic subscription, and headed out for a new ride. Drove about 45 minutes from my house. Then proceeded to f*#k around with the app for another 45 minutes. It absolutely refused to pair with my HRM and Powertap at the same time as the RFLKT. Restart, repair, turn BT off and on. Spectacularly frustrating. In the end, I gave up and drove to a different location for a ride I already knew. Bummer! This app claims that it will pair with all the Bluetooth accessories automatically once paired and you begin recording. It just doesnt. Id suggest they add something like Wahoos app so that you can see the devices paired and connected prior to starting. Turn by turn on the RFLKT is a GREAT IDEA, and something Ive wanted forever. Unfortunately the app cant yet pull it off with HR and Power at the same time.

Excellent

Well, it looks like I found an app to replace S-----. Ive tried a lot of tracking apps for mtb; that was probably the best but it is lacking in many respects that Map My Ride is not, including an array of maps that are much better for trail riding.

Super accuracy!!

I use a well known gps app but when I found this app that I can link my garmin, Im in 100%.. Great app for cyclists..

I ride with this App Awesome!!

I like this app a lot please update it for the Apple Watch!

TBT voice audio doesnt work

This is a fantastic app. However I only received one voice announcement of an up coming turn. All other were just the audio but no voice. Not too happy.

Lots to improve on, not worth it at this point

Right off the bat the app voice response was telling me to turn right when the route was going left. The app didnt work initially on my iPhone 6, so I used an older phone. Thats not a big deal, but the app had a hard time directing me (visually or vocally) when the outbound route overlapped the return path and almost sent me in an infinite loop. Then the app crashed while I was riding and when it came back it forgot my settings. This wouldnt be too bad but the default settings dont seem to follow the rider, display the turn by turn directions, or keep the screen from shutting down while riding.

NICE!!

Great app!! I was hope the cadence and heart rate monitor add to this app soon.
